The Board of Trade has recently become aware of an application before the Canada Industrial Relations Board that requests the removal of Marine Atlantic’s essential service status and that it would allow for a significant reduction in the service offering to and from the province.
We know how critical Marine Atlantic is to our economy. The business community, employees, suppliers, residents, and visitors all rely on this system. Access to Newfoundland and Labrador, including the free movement of food, goods and people, is essential to the province’s economic prosperity, health, and safety. Any reduction in ferry service capacity could have detrimental consequences for residents, businesses, and supply chains.
As this situation continues to unfold, we will remain focused on ensuring broader public-interest impacts are clearly understood by government and decision-makers.
We welcome input from members on how reduced ferry service would affect your business, staff, suppliers, community, and customers. We commit to keeping you informed as additional information becomes available.
