The Board of Trade Calls for Increased Dialogue Between City of St. John’s and Business Community

St. John’s, NL – December 11th, 2024 – In light of the 2025 City of St. John’s Budget and the recent wave of business closures, the Board of Trade is calling for increased dialogue between the city and the business community to address the economic challenges affecting local businesses.

“While we're pleased to see that taxes have not increased for businesses, the reality is, owning and operating a business right now has never been more challenging. The City of St. John’s has a responsibility to understand the current business climate, and work with partners and businesses to create an environment where they can succeed.” said AnnMarie Boudreau, CEO of The Board of Trade.

Our members are feeling that consideration for business was not given the attention it needed in the 2025 budget. Many businesses are making tough decisions and our community could look very different a year from now if we don’t address the issues by being more forward-thinking and creative.

“We have been asking for more communication between business and the city for some time now,” added Boudreau. "Without open communication and dialogue, the city is unable to make informed, balanced decisions – which are essential, as businesses have a unique perspective on the realities facing our economy.”

The Board of Trade supports investing in economic development initiatives that create new opportunities for business owners, however, concurrent to these activities we also have to support and sustain businesses that have already chosen to operate here.

The Board of Trade is committed to continuing its advocacy efforts and looks forward to working alongside the City of St. John’s to create an environment that benefits all.
