St. John’s, NL – The Board of Trade is pleased to announce the appointment of Shane Hickey as Director, Employer Advisors. In this strategic leadership role, Shane will oversee the delivery of confidential advisory services to employers across Newfoundland and Labrador, guiding them through the requirements of workers’ compensation, occupational health and safety, and labour standards legislation. He will lead a team of Employer Advisors, set strategic direction for service delivery, and collaborate with WorkplaceNL, government, and regulatory bodies to ensure employer perspectives shape provincial policy and workplace practices.
Shane brings exceptional expertise in legislative interpretation, policy development, and employer legislative compliance, supported by more than a decade of progressive leadership experience. Most recently, as Review Commissioner for the Workers’ Compensation Independent Review Board, he adjudicated external reviews of WorkplaceNL decisions, ensuring fairness and compliance. Previously, as Director of Employment Standards and Residential Tenancies for the Yukon Government, Shane led operational programs, implemented legislative changes, and engaged diverse stakeholders. His career demonstrates a strong capacity for strategic foresight, operational excellence, and relationship-building across sectors.
A graduate of Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Law (J.D.) and Memorial University’s Faculty of Business (B.B.A. Honours), Shane combines legislative expertise with business acumen. He is recognized for his ability to mentor teams, navigate sensitive workplace issues with professionalism and empathy, and translate complex legislation into practical guidance for employers.
