The St. John’s Board of Trade’s Position on the Wage Gap and Equal Pay Legislation in Newfoundland and Labrador:
 
The St. John’s Board of Trade is in full support of closing the gender wage gap. 

Research shows that Newfoundland and Labrador ranks second-to-last of the Canadian Provinces with an 11% gender wage gap. [1] This needs to be addressed, especially as we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic. Research also shows that how we close the gap is complex, and could include increases to the minimum wage, reduction to the cost of childcare, pay transparency legislation, pay equity legislation, and more. [2]

We believe pay equity is something employers should be thinking about and striving for, and we recognize that some already are. We also know that organizations who foster diverse, flexible, and inclusive environments do better – they innovate and meet customers' needs in part due to their diversity. [3] In short, equality in the workplace is a win-win situation.

There are many experts in our province – organizations and associations passionate and informed about this topic – able to advise and make meaningful change to close the wage gap. Our role as a business association is to bring the voice of our members forward, and work to understand the impact of legislation, especially on the small and medium sized businesses who make up the majority of our membership. 
 
We are eager to hear from the Interdepartmental Committee on Pay Equity on their progress in assessing pay equity legislation, pay transparency legislation, and the many other factors leading to a gender wage gap in Newfoundland and Labrador. 
 
Our doors and inboxes are open to our members and government at all levels – we are committed to being a part of the solution to the gender wage gap and are looking forward to hearing how any number of issues, opportunities, or options impact the business community. Our collective efforts are needed to ensure Newfoundland and Labrador is a great place to live and do business. We can all work together to make a significant, cost effective, and impactful change.
